It's one of the most searched questions about Brightspace, usually typed at 1 a.m. the night before something is due. The honest answer is more boring than the rumours. Brightspace itself is mostly a filing cabinet with a gradebook. What it can and can't "see" depends on which extra tools your school plugs into it.

How Turnitin's AI score works
Most schools that check for AI writing do it through Turnitin, which plugs into Brightspace assignment folders. When your school has the AI writing feature turned on, your instructor sees a percentage of the paper that Turnitin thinks was generated by AI. Students usually can't see this number, even when they can see the regular similarity report.
The score is a prediction, not proof. Turnitin itself says it shouldn't be the only basis for an academic integrity decision, and students do get flagged for writing they did themselves. If that ever happens to you, your best evidence is your process: drafts, notes, outlines and the version history in Google Docs or Word.
What quiz logs show
Brightspace keeps a record of every quiz attempt. Instructors can see when you started, when each answer was saved, and when you submitted. That isn't AI detection, but patterns stand out, like a hard question answered in four seconds or every answer arriving at the same steady pace. Some instructors look at these logs when something seems off.
Lockdown browsers and proctoring
For higher stakes quizzes and exams, schools often add a lockdown browser. While the quiz is open, it blocks other apps, other websites, copying and screenshots. Proctored exams go further and record your webcam, microphone or screen. If a quiz uses one of these, you'll know, because you have to install or launch it before you can start.
Studying with AI is a different thing
Almost every course AI policy is about work you hand in. Using AI to understand a lecture you missed, make practice questions, or plan your week before a midterm is much closer to working with a tutor than to submitting AI writing. Policies still vary a lot by course and instructor, so check the syllabus, and ask if you're not sure.
